Christmas is a time for family – and forgiveness – and that appears to have struck a chord with the Duke of Sussex who, we can reveal, has been hoping for a royal reunion this festive period.
It’s no secret that relations between Prince Harry and the royal family have been strained in recent times. And just when it seemed a reconciliation could be on the cards, the fallout from journalist Omid Scobie’s book, Endgame, has once again left their relationship in tatters.
But despite the frosty atmosphere, a source has claimed that “lonely” Harry is keen to spend time with his family in the UK – much to the dismay of Prince William.
“Harry is still holding out hope for a family reunion over the holidays, despite William putting his foot down,” our source claimed.
“William is adamant that he doesn’t want to come face to face with his brother until they have been able to sit down and hash things out. It is proving an almost impossible task to get the brothers in the same place at the same time.”
King Charles, however, is believed to be “more open” to welcoming Harry, 39, his wife Meghan, 42, and their children Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two, because he “wants to build a relationship with his grandchildren”.
The source said, “There was talk of possibly meeting up with the King on Boxing Day or even over New Year’s so that Charles can see his grandchildren and they can sit down in a friendly environment and talk things through.”
While Harry apparently wants to spend some time with his nearest and dearest, our royal source claimed it’s “not looking likely” at the moment.
“Harry wants nothing more than to be able to spend time in the UK this Christmas,” we’re told. “He’s got invites from friends
to join them and it’s where he feels at home. He doesn’t feel the Americans can do Christmas like the Brits and he certainly doesn’t think that anyone can celebrate Christmas like the Windsors.”
The source added that Harry is feeling “lonely” – and wants to find his way back home to his family.
“Meghan doesn’t want to come back to the UK at all,” they said. “She’s got her heart set on staying in California. She wants to build her life there, bring up the family there and focus on her career.
“I think Harry is the complete opposite – I think he has his heart set on bringing his family back to the UK. I’m sure it’s a very difficult situation for them as a family to be in.”
It comes after Scobie – who was previously dubbed “Meghan’s mouthpiece” by the UK press – made a string of shock allegations about the royal family in his new book.
Things then went from bad to worse after the King and the Princess of Wales were accidentally named in the Dutch edition of the book in relation to alleged queries about the colour of Harry and Meghan’s son Archie’s skin before he was born. Scobie has since claimed that an “uncleared” version of the manuscript was provided to the Dutch publisher without
his knowledge.
While there was previously a glimmer of hope that Harry and Meghan were building bridges with the King – with reports of
a phone call on the monarch’s 75th birthday last month – our source said this latest drama has set them back.
“The King seemed open to some sort of discussion until Endgame was released. Things slowly started to get back on track, but are now back to square one,” the source claimed.
“And there’s no way that the damage can be repaired with his brother any time soon, which is very upsetting for Harry. But he’s holding out hope that he will soon be able to sit down with his father and talk.”
While the past few years have undeniably been challenging for Harry and Meghan, there is a glimmer of hope that 2024 could bring happier times.
“Harry is adamant that he will spend more time in the UK next year so that he can build bridges with his family. He wants
to repair it and doesn’t want it dragging on,” the source claimed.
“It sounds rather clichéd, but there’s no doubt in my mind Harry’s New Year’s resolution will be to make sure he repairs things with his family. I think he feels next year will be make or break.”
The source claimed, “He’s been feeling rather exasperated by how badly things have been going over the past few years
and wants to put it behind him and move forward in a positive light.”
