In an interview on the White Wine Question Time podcast, the gardening expert discussed their 40-year marriage, as he looked back at the beginning. Monty revealed he first fell in love with Sarah when she was already married.
Sarah, at the time, was with a wealthy botanist with Monty admitted that at the start of their love story, it was “complicated”. Opening up on falling in love, he described their attraction as “intense”.
The BBC star explained: “It was obviously complicated”. Adding, “I don’t think it was love at first sight. I think it was intense attraction at first sight.

He revealed that he met the pair socially for around six months.
In his honest recollection of their early days, he confessed: “Her husband was someone that I rode with and knew very well, and that was the case for about six months where I’d meet them socially”.
The star recalled he and Sarah did not get together immediately – as their relationship progressed over time.

“’Why’s the person that you feel strongly attracted to with somebody else? Marriage or not’.”
However, Monty shared that at the time, he did not believe he and Sarah could be anything more than friends.
“It never crossed my mind that it could be anything else”.
“It wasn’t like I was trying to pinch someone else’s wife – there was no question of that,” he insisted.
A year later, their paths crossed due to her husband being away on a work trip.
Monty claimed: “She decided that she absolutely didn’t want to sort of have an affair.
“She chose me and it was for about six months an extremely difficult, unhappy tormented set up because he obviously was not very happy with that arrangement.”
“No I don’t. I thought it was great, it was wonderful. I’m so glad. I feel sorry for him, but it happened and I’m really glad it happened. I have no regrets at all.”
Following their nuptials, Monty and Sarah welcomed three children together.
They have two boys and a girl – Adam, Freya and Tom.
All three are believed to be in their thirties now and have gone on to have their own children.
