Scott grew up "in a poor, single-parent household" to a mother who worked long hours as a nursing assistant, according to his Senate bio.

He worked his way up through county and state politics before being elected to the House of Representatives in 2010.

In 2013, he was appointed to the Senate by then-South Carolina governor – now rival presidential candidate – Nikki Haley, following the resignation of incumbent Senator Jim DeMint.

He won a special election to complete DeMint's term in 2014.

This was backed up by wins in 2016 and 2022, as he made history as the first Black senator from the South since Reconstruction.

Scott owns an insurance agency, Tim Scott Allstate, and is a partner in Pathway Real Estate Group, LLC.

His estimated net worth is said to be around $200,000, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Is Tim Scott running for President in 2024?

Senator Scott formally announced his presidential campaign on Monday, May 22, 2023.

Around 11.30am ET, the presidential candidate personally addressed his hometown.

"Are you proud to be an American?" he asked the crowd, before giving his mother a shoutout and welcoming her to the stage.

"For those of you who wonder if it's possible for a broken kid from a broken home to rise above their circumstances, the answer is yes," he continued.

Before his speech, the congressman took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the current president.

He wrote, hours before his campaign officially launched: "President Biden is on track to become the first President in American history to default on the debt limit.

"We need a leader who is able to step up to the plate and negotiate a responsible budget."

On Friday, May 19, 2023, news broke that Scott filed to run for president in 2024.

The filing is available via the Federal Election Commission's website.

He announced his first step toward a presidential bid in April by launching an exploratory committee.

He said in a video, titled Faith in America: “I know America is a land of opportunity, not a land of oppression. I know it because I lived it.

“I will never back down in defense of the conservative values that make America exceptional.”

During an interview with Fox & Friends detailing his announcement, he said: “I have found that people are starving for hope.

"They’re starving for an optimistic, positive message that is anchored in conservative values."

In June 2023, the senator has been at the center of controversyalongside Nikki Haley after former President Barack Obama criticized their handling of race relations.

The two South Carolina Republicans in turn were critical of Obama for his handling of race during his presidency, as reported by abcnews.com

Scott tweeted: "Let us not forget we are a land of opportunity, not a land of oppression.

"Democrats deny our progress to protect their power. The Left wants you to believe faith in America is a fraud and progress in our nation is a myth.”

And Haley tweeted: "[Obama] set minorities back by singling them out as victims instead of empowering them.

"In America, hard work & personal responsibility matter.

"My parents didn’t raise me to think that I would forever be a victim. They raised me to know that I was responsible for my success."

Obama said on The Axe Files with David Axelrod: "If somebody is not proposing, both acknowledging and proposing elements that say, 'No, we can't just ignore all that and pretend as if everything's equal and fair. We actually have to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.'

"If they're not doing that, then I think people are rightly skeptical.

"I think there's a long history of African-American or other minority candidates within the Republican Party who will validate America and say, ‘Everything’s great, and we can make it.' Nikki Haley I think has a similar approach.

"I'm not being cynical about Tim Scott individually, but I am maybe suggesting the rhetoric of 'Can't we all get along?' … that has to be undergirded with an honest accounting of our past and our present."
