Corrie: Iain MacLeod on Jennie McAlpine’s maternity leave
Coronation Street star Jennie McAlpine gave birth to her third child this year, a baby girl – and admits she was “surprised” when she first discovered her daughter’s sex.
The 39-year-old ITV star actually welcomed little Doris back in April, but had wanted to give herself some time with the newborn before going public.
Now, in a new interview, she has disclosed that the moment of discovery when she first learned her baby was a girl was captured on camera by midwives on the day of the birth.
She told OK! magazine of the momentous occasion: “Most people had guessed it would be a boy and I suppose somewhere in my brain I must have thought that too, because it was a genuine surprise when he [revealed I’d had a girl].”
She enthused that the moment was “so emotional”, adding: “You can see my shock on the video as she’s brought up to me and I said, ‘I can’t believe it!'”

Her husband Chris Farr acted “like a third midwife” and was the first to realise the sex.
It meant the pair had to abandon the boys’ names they’d discussed, which had already been narrowed down after Chris decided he didn’t want names belonging to members of rival football teams.
“There were a lot of boys’ names discarded, mainly because of football. Albert is a Manchester United fan and I think he left us with about two boys’ names to choose from,” Jennie joked.

The first landlady ever to run the Rovers pub (played by actress Annie Walker) had been called Doris Speed in the soap.
Doris is also a “family name” for Jennie, so she had no hesitation in choosing it for her latest child.
She and Chris now have three kids, but the delighted new mum has revealed she isn’t ruling out extending her family further in the future.
She endured a difficult birth and was in the hospital for some time, although she’s opted not to share the “gory details” with fans.
However, that hasn’t deterred her from considering future pregnancies.
In the meantime, she’s already introduced Doris to fellow Corrie stars including Maureen Lipman, who plays Evelyn Plumber, and of course her on-screen husband Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs.
Fans are currently missing Jennie as her character is working away in Norwich, forcing Tyrone and the children to speak to her over video-link instead of in person.
However, the star has assured fans she’ll be returning to the cobbles soon, after she’s had a chance to bond with her baby girl.
